The 2024 ASPCA Maclay Final kicks off this morning, with the first competitor stepping foot in the ring at 7:15 a.m. It is estimated that the final round will start at 4:25 p.m. Scott Fitton, Cynthia Hankins, Keri Kampsen and Lyman T. Whitehead are judging the class of 174 competitors. Bobby Murphy and the judges designed the course using several fences that featured at the Paris Olympics this summer. The Chronicle will be updating you with standby lists every 45 riders.

The First Round Course

There is a dotted line set approximately one-third of the way down the ring that riders may not cross before or after their round. Riders begin on a right lead to a blue vertical out of the corner near the out-gate. They’ll then continue up a straight line in five strides to an oxer with colorful rails and brush standards. Following that they’ll execute a right-hand turn to a pair of Palace of Versailles verticals at 3AB in one stride set across the ring. They’ll need to land organized, because their next turn comes up quickly. They’ll turn left to the Maclay oxer, set on the short side at the far end of the ring, and then roll back over a vertical at 5. After cantering through the corner they’ll meet Fence 6, the ASPCA triple bar set on the quarterline, bending right in five strides to an airy oxer with no ground line at 7. They’ll then bend left over a vertical with blue rails heading towards the out-gate in six strides. They’ll have a chance to regroup through the corner before approaching the triple combination at 9ABC, which is an oxer-vertical-oxer with one stride in between. Riders then come all the way through the corner to an oxer at 10, which is set on the diagonal to a vertical with macaroons at 11 in five strides. The final fence is the LA2028 oxer from the Paris Olympics, set on the short side of the ring.

Twenty-four riders will advance to the flat, which will be split into three groups of eight.

The Flat Phase

The judges had the riders enter the ring without irons. They could either cross them or leave them hanging. They were asked to do rising trot, sitting trot, canter, walk, counter-canter, walk and reverse. After they changed directions they picked up their irons and performed a counter-canter, flying change to true canter lead, rising trot, sitting trot and walk.

The Second Round Course

Riders will start on the left lead and jump the LA28 oxer set on the short side of the ring near the in-gate, they’ll then continue to a vertical set on the diagonal with a slight bend to an oxer. Fence 4 is the Maclay oxer, still set on the other short side, but it will jump in the opposite direction in this round. They’ll then roll back to the Versailles double verticals, which are now jumping the opposite direction. They’ll do a 90 degree turn to an oxer-vertical double set along the rail headed towards the out-gate, bending to a vertical set on the diagonal. Riders then continue through the turn to jump 8, a vertical, bending right to an oxer. The judges have asked them to demonstrate seven strides in that line. They’ll then bend left to another oxer on the quarterline. Riders will continue around the short side before rolling back to a vertical on the inside before making a right-hand turn to the final oxer, set towards the in-gate.

The Test

The judges want to test Maddie Tosh, Christian Dominguez, Adriana Forte and Taylor Cawley in that order.

For the test riders will walk in ring, hand gallop fence 10. Canter fence 11, canter 5ab, canter 9, canter 12. Halt and stand for 4-6 seconds and walk to the gate.
