The dressage competition of the Rio Olympic Games began with the Grand Prix—you can read all about how it went down here in the Chronicle’s coverage from yesterday.
The short story is the German team is looking pretty unbeatable, and Charlotte Dujardin and Valegro boosted the British team into second with a test that put them on top individually. A personal best Grand Prix from Legolas and Steffen Peters combined with excellent efforts from Laura Graves, Allison Brock and Kasey Perry-Glass put the U.S. team into third.
The Grand Prix Special scores complete the team competition. The Special goes on Aug. 12 (9 a.m. – 3 p.m. EST). Team medals are awarded after the Special, with the Grand Prix and Special scores each counting 50 percent toward the cumulative score.
The top 18 individual riders after the Grand Prix and Special go forward to the Grand Prix freestyle on Aug. 15, where they’ll ride for individual medals. They start on a clean slate score-wise, so the freestyle score determines the individual medal finish.
