The USHJA debuted the 30-Day Horsemanship Stable Challenge on June 14 and the competition was outstanding with 497 entries from ten of the twelve zones that encompass the organization’s membership.

Teams of at least three junior and/or amateur students (per trainer) signed up to take the online Horsemanship Quiz Challenge Practice Quiz beginning June 14 through July 15.  At the end of the 30-day challenge, the three top scores under each trainer were averaged to provide an overall score with the highest scoring trainer in each zone declared the champion.

Arianna Harris, a 2012 Emerging Athletes Program participant, found an innovative means to motivate and educate barn mates through the horsemanship lessons she brought back from EAP. Harris organized a point system for the school kids at Donna Kriese’s Zone 5 stable to earn “free rides” at the barn. Points were earned by picking up rocks, cleaning water buckets, tack and other stable chores, as well as reading George Morris texts and taking the USHJA Horsemanship Quiz Challenge. Thanks to Harris’ idea, Kriese earned the top spot among trainers in her zone.

Zone 10 winning trainer Elizabeth Evans shared her thoughts about the program, “My mother (who is also my trainer) has always instilled in me the importance of horsemanship.  I believe that since your horse cannot speak it is your responsibility to educate yourself so you can intelligently make decisions for him or her.  Ever since hearing about the HQC I was excited to participate and couldn’t wait to tell other people.  I have been introducing more and more people to the HQC program since becoming an ambassador and cannot convey how many benefits it has to offer.  I have had most of our students read the study guide to start them on a path of increasing their horsemanship.  Winning the 30-Day Challenge is really exciting; because I take horsemanship very seriously it’s great to be able to be recognized for it.  The other winners of this challenge are the students; I wouldn’t have been able to win if it wasn’t for them and their knowledge of horsemanship. Thanks USHJA and Horsemanship Quiz Challenge!”
