GUESS WHO?
This gentleman was a prominent Maryland horseman of his day. At the time this photo was taken he was the chairman of the Maryland Racing Commission.
He was an owner and breeder of many fine racehorses, both steeplechasers and flat horses and is perhaps most known for breeding one of the most famous racing fillies of all time.
Extra credit if you can name this three-time Maryland Hunt Cup winner he’s sitting on.

And the answer is: Stuart S. Janney Jr.

Mr. Janney and his wife bred the legendary filly Ruffian for their Locust Hill Farm. Ruffian was never defeted or headed in her all-to-brief racing year. She was 2-year-old champion filly in 1974 and looked destined to be the 3-year-old champion in ’75. But in a match race with that year’s Kentucky Derby winner, Foolish Pleasure, Ruffian broke her leg and had to be euthanized. It’s a tragedy that still reverberates in the Thoroughbred world.
The fine looking gentleman that Mr. Janney is pictured on is Winton (Belli Casus–Rosequartz, Trap Rock), who won the infamous Maryland Hunt Cup three times in 1942, 1946 and 1947.
And the winner is: Karen Gagnon Wojciak & Kathy Gagnon Pappas of Double K Farm in Ma., who sent in the first correct answer. Congratulations! We’ll be in touch soon regarding the big prize for such good memories!
Siobhan DeLancey gets a gold star for being the only person to correctly guess Winton’s name.
