The German Equestrian Federation announced today that eventer Sandra Auffarth on Viamant Du Matz is withdrawing from the Paris Olympic Games, and that reigning Olympic individual gold medalist Julia Krajewski will take her place with Nickel.

At the final health check on Tuesday evening at the German training camp in Deauville, France, Viamant Du Matz “was found to be not 100 percent fit” according to a press release.

“Up until then, the horse had made a great impression in terms of training and condition, but was not quite clear in the last trot. So it was clear to us that the two of them unfortunately could not come to Paris,” said national Coach Peter Thomsen. “That is very sad for us, but of course especially for Sandra, her horse owner and her whole team. We would have loved to have Sandra Auffarth and Viamant Du Matz on the team as team world champions, team vice-European champions and European bronze medalists.”

The eventing competition begins with dressage at the Chateau du Versailles on July 27 and continues through July 29.
