Badminton Horse Trials organizers announced Monday, May 8, that the horse WSF Carthago, owned by Frank Breach and ridden Fiona Kashel, was humanely euthanized after sustaining an injury Sunday on cross-country. Kashel was eliminated in a fall at Fence 26, the Jubilee Clump Brush. Horse & Hound reported that WSF Carthago was trailered off course “after putting his foot in the ditch at Fence 26.”
Carthago, a 13-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Cobra—Enigma, Viking) gelding, was contesting his third CCI5*-L. Last year, he and Kashel finished seventh at Luhmühlen (Germany) and 29th at Pau (France).

According to the statement from organizers, “WSF Carthago was treated in the veterinary clinic at Badminton and subsequently hospitalized. The extent of injury found in surgery meant successful repair was not possible and our commiserations go to the whole team.”
