In an amazing finish to a spectacular weekend at the Rome CSIO5*, McLain Ward won the Loro Piana Grand Prix of Rome in stunning style, as he and HH Azur left the star-studded field almost 2 seconds in the dust.

Ward and HH Azur, who turned in two clean rounds to help the U.S. team tie for second in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup on Friday, joined 12 other riders in the second round of the class after jumping clean in Round 1. Then they turned on the speed for Round 2 and stopped the timers in 40.45 seconds to relegate Peder Fredricson of Sweden to second aboard H&M All In (42.05 seconds).

Fellow U.S. rider Laura Kraut picked up third place with the only other two clean rounds of the day, as she and the 9-year-old Zeremonie finished Round 2 fault-free and in 45.39 seconds. Kent Farrington had picked up a rail in Round 1, but qualified for Round 2, where he jumped the second-fastest clean of the day (40.78 seconds) to finish fifth as the fastest four-faulter.

Ward finished as the Leading Rider of the Rome CSIO after winning the Engel & Völkers 1.55-meter Grand Prix on Saturday and another 1.55-meter class earlier in the week on HH Carlos Z, then jumping two clean rounds for the U.S. team in the Furusiyya FEI Nations Cup on HH Azur, then topping the final grand prix with the mare as well.
