Favorit Z, who was ridden by Australia’s Sam Griffiths at the Tattersalls CCI*** in Ireland this weekend, was euthanized after an accident on the cross-country course today.

Griffiths reported the death on his Facebook page.

“Today was a very sad day for us all,” he wrote. “Our beautiful Frodo [Favorit Z] broke his leg on the cross-country at Tattersalls and had to be put to sleep. We are all devastated. He was the most exceptional horse—incredibly talented, stunningly beautiful and above all the nicest person, so gentle and kind. Today we lost a dear friend, and we are left with a huge hole in our hearts.”

The 10-year-old Zangersheide (Favoritas XX—Galve Z, Gotspe Z) gelding owned by Griffiths and Sue Brendish was first after dressage at this event, and the cross-country results report he had 20 jumping penalties at fence 9 and then the fall of horse at fence 12.

Frodo most recently completed the Boekelo CCI*** (the Netherlands) in 26th place with a clear cross-country.
