Devon Horse Show Adds CSI****

The 120th Devon Horse Show has been designated a Fédération Equestre Internationale CSI**** this year. The feature event—the Sapphire Grand Prix of Devon—more than doubled its prize money, making the purse $225,000. The show, which will take place May 26-June 5, in Devon, Pa., will also offer the $50,000 Devon Welcome Stake and the $40,000 Devon International Speed Stake with a four-star rating.

Though a major stop for a number of U.S. riders, Devon has only hosted FEI classes once—in 2012, when it held a selection trial for the London Olympic Games.

“We’re going to try to get a few of the big names that have supported us in the past,” said Peter Doubleday, who announces and co-chairs the show with David Distler. “There’s so much going on out there, as you well know, that they have gone elsewhere. We still have some pretty good fields, but we just thought this might help us out. Actually doubling the purse for Thursday might be a little incentive for them to come back and get some valuable FEI points and see how it goes.

“It seems that’s what some riders want is to try to get some FEI points,” he continued. “So if this actually brings back maybe 10 of the big name riders out of the top 100 we’d be very excited. We’d say we accomplished what we set out to do.”
