Ellen A. Gavin knew at a young age that art would be her passion; she began painting and drawing when she was 4 years old. As a child and adolescent she drew only horses, dreaming about owning a pony.
“I rode when and where I could,” said Gavin. “Starting serious lessons as an adult, I finally owned three horses over a 10-year period, showing in hunters and equitation.”

Gavin, Millville, N.J., now rides occasionally but still paints horses. She’s an associate member of the American Academy of Equine Art. This week’s cover, Wipe Down, is a 9″ x 12″ oil.
