Scottsdale, AZ – Dr Jerry Longworth is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of his new all breed equine reproduction and rehabilitation center in the Rio Verde area of Scottsdale, Arizona. This state-of-the-art facility offers horse owners the opportunity to have their prized horses under the direct care and management of a foremost equine reproduction practitioner GR Longworth VMD.
“What we have to offer at Scottsdale Equine Reproduction Center (SERC) is somewhat different than most equine reproduction facilities,” comments Dr. Longworth. “My background in equine reproduction has involved working with a variety of equine breeds including Gypsy Vanners, Warm Bloods, Arabians, Saddlebreds and of course Quarter Horses. At any one time you can visit the ranch and see stallions from this breed selection and/or foals running and playing in the pastures together. It’s a lot of fun to watch.”
Dr. Longworth is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and has credited his obsession with equine reproduction to his mentors Dr. Dean Neely, Dr. Patricia Sertich, Dr. Wendy Vaala, Dr. Richard Beck and Dr. William Swires.
“They have been a great influence in my decision to pursue equine reproduction.” Dr. Longworth has honed his craft to include specific technologically advanced services such as Embryo Vitrification, better know as freezing. “The process of freezing embryos has come a long way,” he said.
“We can now flush an embryo from a mare, freeze it and store it for years, or even just for use the next year.” Vitrification solves some of the concerns with breeding older mares. “Quality mares that are getting up there in age are less likely to be reproductively sound. Vitrification allows us to flush and freeze these mare’s embryos. The embryos can be stored and inserted into a recipient mare at a later date.”
Along with the specialties of reproduction, Scottsdale Equine Reproduction Center offers a full service injury and post-surgical rehabilitation service. “We work very closely with the veterinarians at Chaparral Veterinary Medical Center in Cave Creek. Often horses leave the hospital after emergency or elective surgery, but still need continued care, medications, bandage changes, physical therapy, etc. We offer 24-hour a day, 7-day a week monitoring of all the horses under our care. The entire facility is even under 24 hour video surveillance,” comments with a laugh. “We can be sitting in the lab and watch the babies in the pasture on the video monitor.”
Dr. Longworth also credits the overall success of his current and rapidly growing practice to his staff. “I couldn’t do what I do without being able to rely on competent, reliable staff,” he says. “Rachel (Dr. Longworth’s Field Assistant) has been working with me for over five years now. There isn’t much that she can’t do!” he said with a smile. “I have hired Katie Costello to be the breeding manager at SERC. Katie has a long background in the horse industry, and was recently inducted into the PCCHA Youth Hall of Fame.” Katie is the daughter of cutting horse trainer David Costello. “My staff’s work ethic is second to none. I am very fortunate,” he exclaims.

With a long list of current clients already taking advantage of the new facility it won’t be long before another breeding season arrives and more foals hit the ground to start their lives and head for the various show pens. “It is exciting to have these foals that I have worked to create come full circle and end up back in my breeding barn,” says Dr. Longworth. “The very first broodmare to grace my new mare barn was a foal bred by me and now she is producing babies and I get to be part of it all.”
