Default post your "beautiful head" pictures --Pictures on last page, give thoughts :)

Ok, this post wont be limited to foals, but I would like to see what everyone thinks is a "gorgeous head" on a foal and why.

    why are heads so important?

    Default Love an Irish noggin!

    Glimmer

Keeping in mind I breed Irish horses...I think this is beautiful. Won't be everyone's cup of tea but I prefer a longer head and ear than most with a large expressive eye. More "handsome" than "pretty" I guess

Here are shots of babies some last year and some this that people said they liked their heads...I think it is truly a personal preference, although noone likes a gigantic head.

Here are some of my babies all from the same dam "Happy Morning" as foals.. I think they all turned out to have very pretty heads, actually a lot better than momma.

Here are three that I like (Arabs -- but I strongly dislike those cartoon charicature-type of heads -- you know, the banana-shaped "how they heck do they even breathe?" type of heads)

Two mares in the snow are purebreds. The grey is GOV MMB. She is the dam of horse three -- the black/grey weanling (by Rosenthal.)

A few of mine. The first three are full sisters and the last two are daughters by different stallions of the third horse. Grandma has a gorgeous head too. The third pic is by our own Reg Corkum.

wow - what a bunch of really pretty foals.
I really liked my '05 filly's head and my Toronto filly this year has a head I like.
They are very different but both pleasant. The Toronto filly photo is by Reg Corkum.

I actually think all my Sempatico foals have lovely heads. Hope and Symphony(aka Faith) are out of the same dam who also has a lovely head. The fourth photo is of Joy, who is also by Sempatico. That is not the best picture of her head, I need to try to get a better one. Lastly, not a foal picture, (I didn't breed her so I don't have one) but one of my favorite heads of all time, Rio. (It's the the greatest shot, but you get the idea). Sorry the foals aren't all head shots, I have to get a good head shots of Faith and Joy. At the moment they are so in my pocket it's hard to get them, unless you want a fish-eye photo ofthem sticking their noses in the lense.

As for why heads are so important...I've heard people say the phrase, "you don't ride the head", but I DO have to look at it all day, so I really try to have pretty heads. I think a pretty head gives an elegance to a foal and of course, that makes it more saleable.

I think that my TB mare throws very nice heads.

I loved the head on her Pablito colt from 2004 (of course Pablito has a gorgeous head too)

Her other two foals have beautiful heads as well, just not as Arab-like.

Here's one of my Dutch colts from 2004 that started out with the "banana" head (see day 1 picture), and then just got prettier and prettier (see month 2 picture).

I think that kind, expressive eyes make a horse's head beautiful. The angle of the shot also affects how a head appears.

Add that all together, then mix in the adage "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

I have three shots: Yearling Swedish filly at a DSHB show, same filly as a, well, filly, and a 9 yr old Danish wb who is now 11.
