Default Is It Worth Leasing Out My Mare?

I have had multiple people approach me about leasing my mare. She's a homebred that has competed through intermediate/CCI* level eventing, 13 years old now, very sound and uncomplicated. I really want to breed her, but she has proven very difficult to get pregnant.

I'm hoping that by leasing her out for a period of time, I can use the money I would get to put into a "fund" to take her to a repro specialist. I've never leased a horse out before, so I'm curious what the "going rate" would be. Right now, she lives on my property so my expenses for her are minimal; just hay, feed, and routine vet/ farrier. I doubt I would find a local person because of how rural I am. Is it unfair to ask a lessee to pay a lease fee on top of board if they want to keep her somewhere (plus the cost of shoes and supplements)? I would rather just keep her here and ride her some through the winter rather than send her somewhere and not see any money from it. I'm not in it for the profit, but I'm wondering if this would be a good way to help with vet bills later on. Thoughts?

Tough decision. You risk laming her up if you send her off. You can always ask for 10% value/12 months (x6 for 6 mo. Lease), 6 month lease & board paid up front - if she is a winner she'd be worth the fee. Then you'd have the cash to spend in the reproduction area.

If you are not in a financial fix...I would not lease off my property. Research here on COTH and you will find stories to curl your hair!! I'm sure some people make out all right...I just would not consider sending my horse off to a total stranger...and most likely ...for free!
