Please Open Off Topic
SO many topics that need replies.
It's not enough to pray and jingle.
Those asking need to know others are pulling for them.
I\'m not crazy. I\'m just a little unwell.

Thanksgiving is coming up. I am sure they'll open Off Topic for the holiday.

See, I don't get the complaining about it being open. If you don't like it, don't go there. I think the political stuff was starting to test some nerves

I say closed. And why, all of a sudden, are the OT days lasting for a week. I understand Thanksgiving and Black Friday, then close it again.

Not sure, but I was assuming the really long Off Topic time was for a combo of: So many who lost power for a week or longer and so folks can get used to the new format maybe?
I know I was surprised when we finally got power and cable back that the OT was still open. And that everything had changed, LOL!

I think it was the storm, then rolled into the election. Then...went even longer. I was surprised at the length, but I liked it.
Still, open it up because jingles aren't enough? Send a freaking PM, that way "those asking" will know you're pulling for them without all the entertaining drama that public threads engender.

So who complains and why?
I don't ignore the other forums/topics on OT Day, read and post on them as fits, and the OT forum is no different than any other in that if you have no interest you don't need to look at it.
If I knew what I were doing, why would I take lessons?

Seems OT day brings more drama than usual, they probably get tired of moderating it.

I wonder if maybe the mods think if they open OT too often that it will attract too many non-horse people and non-horse discussions that will detract from the rest of the board.

I just like the variety. Even though we all have horses in common, we still have lives outside horses. And while PMs are great, imagine YOU are the poster who has a missing friend, very ill child, dying parent. It's already overwhelming. And WAY easier to reply to a thread than respond to a lot of PMs
A HUGE Thank You, to the mods who allow those threads to stay open, btw.
Coanteen, that was kinda rude
Didn't mind the previous poster that suggested sending PMs.
Easy enough to get point across politely.
Not gonna spend time going back and forth clicking thumbs down tho, LOL!
I honestly did not know that some people dislike OT enough to have strong feelings about it.
Just kinda figured it would be like any other discussion. If I don't wanna look, I don't click.
I do understand about moderating it tho. Mods really do have a lot to do already.

It was realistic. COTH has thousands of active members - on any given day at least one of them is probably dealing with some kind of crisis with themselves, their family, their friends, etc.
So how should it be determined when to keep the forum open for peoples' crises? If you keep it open because one thread hasn't been resolved yet, do you disallow posting new topics - after all, one person's crisis might be resolved just as another person posts a brand new one! Do you keep the forum open for them too?
Do you just keep it open in perpetuity? The mods have indicated in the past that there's no intent to do that. Everyone posting knows OTT is a temporary deal, crisis or no crisis.

I can only remember one instance where OT day was left open but it really was life or death and I am glad the Mods allowed it in that case. It had a happy ending, due in part I'm sure, to some very supportive CoTHers
