    From the chapter headed The Lady's Horse
    The average weight of English ladies is said to be nine stone
    I wonder if that's still true. I doubt it's so in the US.

    ETA: No, the average British lady has gained nearly two stone - she weighs 152 lb nowadays according to Wikipedia. We in the US average about 165 lb.

    Much of late has been said and written against and in favour of cross-saddle riding for girls and women. A lady at my elbow has just given her emphatic opinion that it is neither graceful nor modest, and she predicts that the system will never come into vogue or meet the approval of the finer sense of women.
    (for those of you not sure - yes, cross-saddle is what is commonly referred to today as riding astride.)

    When I was a young, horse-crazy kid, I used to help out an old lady (in her 90s) with her horse. Her name was Ethel Allaire, and she was one of the first women to compete astride in public. She was the first woman to jump a triple-bar in public.

    There are a lot of gems in there. I would love to have a copy of this on my shelf.

    That must be why I have to tighten my own girth, being in the Colonies and all.
