When I was a young, horse-crazy kid, I used to help out an old lady (in her 90s) with her horse. Her name was Ethel Allaire, and she was one of the first women to compete astride in public. She was the first woman to jump a triple-bar in public.

There are a lot of gems in there. I would love to have a copy of this on my shelf.
"Though ladies are not supposed to girth their own horses, occasion may arise, in the Colonies especially, when they may be called upon to perform that office."
That must be why I have to tighten my own girth, being in the Colonies and all.
