arthritis in stifle after meniscal surgery? what is best treatment
My mare is having surgery on her meniscus around the first week of next month. The vet said she will have arthritis as a result of the surgery. What can I do for her? Vet is suggesting IRAP injections, what else can do, supplementally or topically?
* The baby will be three years old on 5/18. Update: He's home keeping mama company while she recovers from surgery. "He needs his own reality show." - Baby trainer.
I would go w/ the IRAP and possibly legend or adequan. Equally important is to follow the rehab directions faithfully and over time build up the muscles around that joint. I have a mare that received IRAP for a stifle inflammation - no visible soft tissue - and she is doing really well. You should also be prepared to do the IRAP periodically down the road, depending on her workload. Good luck.
We don't get less brave; we get a bigger sense of self-preservation........
Long term? As much movement as possible (ie pasture board or at minimum an in/out situation).
My old guy is 22 and he's had major stifle issues for the last 10 of the 12 years I've owned him. The best thing I've done for him? Pasture board. Followed by IA injections when needed, directly into the stifle. Legend IM from time to time has helped tremendously as well.
Good luck! I wish Gus had been insured at the time of his last injury ... I would have definitely done the IRAP. Just wasn't feasible at the time though.
