Far more important than tax reform, the economy, or even health care.

Most people just want to quietly live their lives free of interference from the government AND from other people, don't they? they want a job, they want to do their stuff, they don't want much else.
I came of age during the Women's Lib movement. Women fought for the right to determine our own life. That included the ability to obtain a good education and to a good job, have my own credit history ( not my father's or husband's).
My observation is that many, not all, women have chosen to move from their father's care to the government. Yes I personally know women who have been abused, the same is true for males. However many of those individuals have done the hard work and it is very hard to move pass the abuse and have excelled.

I have been disheartened to see the sharp divide between males and females. The earlier comment of sterilizing all male babies is just as bad as anything said by males about women. Stereotyping males, especially white males, gets us no where.

Anyhow, I don't know why I am taking the time to post this. You see that I am from the south and so discount me. You see that I supported Romney and so discount me. You don't care to hear about the young people, of different races, origin and well everything, that my DH and I have mentored. You really have no concern for anyone whose opinion is different from yours.
Instead you crow about your open minds (not), your super intelligence (debatable), your superior educations (again debatable).

OK, you will have free BC and on demand abortions. Life is perfect, you require nothing else because THAT is the MOST IMPORTANT THING.

Come on we're trying to find things we can agree on, move forward with. Why not suggest an improvement?

Was there a need to say "they do talk to each other you know". Yes, I got that, in fact I do notice that when I walk around the rotunda in the building.

    Geez
I really didn't mean to be snarky. I just think it's highly impractical...impossible even. We need to have more moderates in government, plain and simple. Without compromise, we end up with what we've had the last two years. Both sides (and I mean BOTH), have to give.

    1. Nationalize our gas and oil resources. It's working GREAT for Brazil - their economy is booming b/c of it. Oil and gas produced in the USA have to STAY in the USA, and only when there's a clear surplus does it get sold on the open market.

    2. Ban commodities trading in gas and oil in order to stabilize prices.

    3. 21st Amendment to overturn Citizens United and institute a cap on campaign finance.

    4. RAISE the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour. (That'll get people off Welfare.) Institute a national sales tax to pay for it.

    5. Mega tax reform. Close ALL loopholes for corporations but also lower the corp. tax (which really *is* the highest in the Western world) a good bit, from its present 30-whatever to somewhere around 15-18% (I'd go lower if I had to). Same with tax rates on millionaires.

    6. Reinstate Glass-Steagall in its entirety and put some bankers in JAIL. Make it hurt.

    7. Single-payer for all. Get rid of Medicaid and Medicare. We're headed that way anyway, but let's just call it what it is.

    8. Legalize it. We need the revenue.

    9. Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.

    10. 22nd Amendment: equal rights for ALL Americans.

    11. Tax the churches, irrespective of whether they play politics or not. Just TAX them.

    12. Repeal the NDAA. How that even *happened* is just mind-boggling.

    13. Immigration reform, comprehensive. Make it so that it does NOT cost $50,000.00 in attorney's fees to come and live here legally if you want to.

    14. Get rid of the electoral college, thus opening the door for a meaningful third party.

Had enough yet?? I hope this post, if it does nothing else, serves as a friendly reminder to the loyal opposition of exactly how conservative the President really is. It always cracks me up when you call him a Socialist. IF ONLY. He's what used to be called a moderate Republican...

    Have a nice day!

I don't know about more moderates as the system currently stands, but I think more viable political parties with clear platforms would make the government as a whole more moderate. I don't think that Proportional Representation (PR) will work in this country, because the US is too big and there would be too many parties. However, I think that some sort of a system needs to be implemented where 3rd parties actually stand a chance. Getting rid of the electoral college would be a good start. I have been trying to understand why it is necessary for years, and even now, politics degree in hand, I still don't get it.

No, there are 27 amendments already. I am confused by the fact you want to change the already ratified 21st and 22nd amendments. And also, how would a national sales tax pay for a raised minimum wage for anyone other than gov't employees? You realize taxes don't go to the businesses that are paying the minimum wage employees (again, with the exception of gov't employees)?

ETA: Also, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments already address equal rights. There is no need for an additional amendment... if you're alluding to gay marriage here, it should fall under the Equal Protection Clause in the 14th Amendment. Obviously some people in this country still don't think it does.. but there it is.

    I love War Admiral, too.

Such great ideas, here. I was going to say we need to compile them and get someone elected. War Admiral? I think with the help of all of the brains and specialties and ideas in here, we could solve a LOT of problems. And I think people are starting to think we actually can, now.

I went to sleep last night, but am surprised in a happy way to find that we've evolved where we had TWO states putting up legalizing pot, one passed it, and two more for equal marriage. We're ready to make progress and put in new ideas!
