I need help with an issue with my barefoot mustang, but I don't want to start a BF vs. shoes trainwreck. Would anyone be willing to PM with me and look at a picture and offer some advice?

I asked my farrier about it yesterday and his answer was basically "this is a reason people typically put shoes on" and I'm wondering if there are other options, as I don't want to put shoes on this horse if I don't have to.

If you don't trust your farrier's judgement better than whatever advice you are going to get from strangers on the internet, then you may want to find a farrier whose judgement you do trust.

you might not want to put shoes on your horse

but your horse might need shoes

you pay and do what the horse needs thats being a responsible owner

if one doesnt then you shouldnt have horses

and will say farriers are quailfied bf trimmers are not

go to www.horseshoes.com plenty of farriers there take a pic of your horses foot top bottom and sides and post it on there

Nowhere did I say that I would NOT put shoes on my horse IF he needs them. I said I DON'T WANT to if there are other options. Some horses need shoes, some horses don't. At various times in my herd I have had all my horses barefoot and all my horses shod, and everywhere in between. I do not think there is one concrete answer to all problems, which is why I'm seeking other opinions. I know what the farrier's answer is to the situation - I'm interested to hear what the barefoot answer would be.

You can PM me if you want. I'm not anti shoe at all, but I prefer barefoot if possible.

However I really agree with Tom, if you don't trust your farrier's judgement, it is probably time to look for a new one.

Correction. You know what your current farrier's answer is. The only logical reason to seek other opinions is because you have questions about your current farrier's competence.

I'm interested to hear what the barefoot answer would be.

With your current farrier you already know how your horse is doing barefoot. Until you put your horse in somebody else's hands you will not know if there is a better barefoot answer.

I can't send PMs- my screen is all wonky since this "update" I can kinda sorta see PMs (hopefully I could curse over a link) - and would like to see what you are dealing with.

I am in the bay area as well, and have a trimmer which I highly recommend. He is not "anti shoes" and used to be a farrier - but now sticks to trimming and casts.
