A good update!
Today marks the 3 week point of having Summer home and dosing her with antibiotics every. twelve. hours. Whoever posted that these weeks would be trying was absolutely right. I live 30 minutes from the barn, and since I wanted to see with my own two eyeballs that she was getting the meds she is supposed to and at the correct times. My stubborness has meant two hour-long round trip commutes every single day... 7am before work and 7pm when I should be home cooking dinner for DH and snuggling the pups... 
At any rate, I had the vet out yesterday to reultrasound big girl's lungs, and it looked pretty darn good! Her right lung had shown at abscess at VT that was 4cm long, now it's down to 1.5! Her left lung had an abscess 7cm long (
) that is now completely gone! Yippee! When the vet listened to her lungs, he couldn't find much of anything to write home about.
Perhaps the most encouraging thing is that she has decided she would like to be a total loon in her paddock, and has been running enough to warrant being brought in! She isn't coughing after these episodes, so we all are convinced she is feeling back to her old self. 
Vet suggested two more weeks of SMZs every twelve hours to further reduce the size of the anomaly in her right lung, but if she is asymptomatic by Thanksgiving, she can go back to work...slowly!
Any tips, suggestions or experiences bringing one back in the cold weather? Dr. Brett said treat it like she has a tendon injury and bring her back starting with just 10 minutes of walking undersaddle and build up from there.
I'm so relieved! Hoping to be back in the saddle Monday after Thanksgiving!
