Posting from my phone. At Eugene Livestock Auction's monthly horse sale. There is a mare here listed as a wb by Rex Grannus. She is five yrs old, nursing a half apha colt and is a rack of bones. Chestnut w blaze and I think four whites. Says owner passed away and office has no papers. Write up says she is out of a tb mare and could be inspected Westphalian and Han.

I may be wrong, but I believe it is illegal to transport a mare w/a foal at foot.

And this is not the kind of horse meat buyers purchase anyway. The foal is of zero value 'cause it's too small, and as you pointed out, they sell by the pound, so the mare would not be of value either.

The only way a meat guy is going to buy this pair is if they think they can flip 'em using the old "They're going to slaughter if no one buys them" method.

If the horse has no papers, how does anyone know who she is sired by or what year she was born? You have to say whatever is said at auction with several tablespoons of salt....

Rereading story it says there have been three premium foals from the cross so maybe that isn't her.

That is so awesome!

I was delighted last night to get an e-mail from the person that bought her. What a relief that she went to a HOME, and not for meat. The meat buyer quit bidding at $50. I'm hoping that her owner won't mind keeping me updated. I think she's going to be a beautiful mare once she returns to condition. I am so happy that she was rescued!!

In regards to the meat buyer, some - from my understanding - will purchase such, take them home or send them to a feedlot and feed them up, then re-sell (if they took the horse home) or send down the slaughter pipeline. I know of a local horse dealer who does this regularly (takes them back to his place and feeds - not sure how long he keeps them though and so how skinny he would buy), and a local horse and bison feedlot who purchases weaned youngsters, fattens them up over the course of a year, then sends them to slaughter.

So glad this one and her foal were saved!!!

The local meat dealer does this, but only when he knows the papers say that the horse has not been clear of "meds" for the 6 months required. He will keep the horse for the necessary balance and, if someone comes around who wants the horse, he will sell at a much higher price than he would have bought the horse or even sold it at the auction.

I was able to buy this mare from the woman who rescued her three weeks ago. She is SUCH a wonderful girl, and busy being pampered to death.

I owe a big eternal thanks to everybody who had a part in rescuing her.
