    Default "Is Your Horse Muslim?"

The following was posted by one of my FB friends. What would your response have been?

    "Is your horse Muslim?"

I've been asked many odd things while out riding my horses - but never this.

    Until today.

We're assuming it was a comment on his fly mask.

My dark bay gelding with braids and a fly mask is Stevie Wonder. (I didn't make that one up!)

I'm guessing your friend was joking? If so, do you have a photo of your horse with the fly mask and sheet?

    Not joking. It actually happened.

I offered my TB orangeAde, hot chocolate, and other drinks that he slurped with gusto. One day I offered him so beer which he happily drank. I went to my Arab and offered him the same. He sniffed it and turned away. I was somewhat surprised. My friend upon hearing this said "Well of course, he is Muslim".
Got a good laugh out of me.

I remember reading as a child, the Black Stallion or some such book and it followed the story of an Arab stallion in the Mideast. It said even the horses were fed in accordance with Ramadan, no food or drink until the sun sets.

Always answer questions like that with a "Yes."

Never add anything or offer explanation.

Good Lord, I snorked so loudly I scared my hubby and my dogs (sitting in the chair with me)!

My half Arab wouldn't care. As long as he could fit whatever in his mouth, he's good to go!

I loved that book and probably read it 6 or so times as a kid. I can't remember the name of it and it's going to drive me crazy now.

Horses are not very clever, yet somehow they are smart enough to stay well away from organized religion.

You know this may be some of the best advice I have ever read; and it sure beats my reaction -- which would be this smilie w/ the jaw pulled down to the floor.

I taught middle school and worked w/ at-risk kids who will say anything; so I have a very good "look of death" (well an escalating series of them, I guess); but with an adult I am just kind of paralyzed -- unless I know them; in which case they are getting a kick &/or elbow and a "WTF is WRONG w/ you???" in the ear.

At one barn one of the pastures fronted a busy road. In the summertime one of the horses was always turned out in a white fly mask with ears and a white fly sheet. Someone driving by was reported as describing the pasture as the one where "that KKK horse lives."

Okay, not seeing how the short, simple, "YES." answer works in this case. Drat.

This!! It (usually) shuts em up and their reactions are usually good for a laugh.

I have been asked, in all legitimacy, if I'm forcing some sort of religious observance on my horse for putting a fly mask and sheet on him. Some people don't grasp the concept of asking "what is that for?" and jump straight to the 20 questions instead.
