The new majorish baseball team in our town has been named The Rippers, with a logo of menacing-looking man wearing a Victorian top hat carrying a baseball bat — Jack the Ripper.

Thoughts?

Would the team name bother you? Would it bother you enough not to go to the games?

They're glorifying a serial killer, which I think is tacky. However, I think people see Jack the Ripper as more of a scary legend than a real person anymore. I'd say leave it.

I just read an article in the news about a new non-fiction book that suggests Jack the Ripper was really Jackie the Ripper- the infertile wife of a doctor who had been having affairs with prostitutes.

So... I actually think it's a little funny because when I see that, I imagine how a testosterone-fueled team might react if it did come to light that Jack is Jackie. They can have a new mascot, complete with petticoat.

Nope, it doesn't bother me at all. The Ripper murders happened more than a hundred years ago. I'm not sure why anyone would get in a twist over the name.

Couldn't they do better than that? I think it's tacky, and if you learn more about how horrific the crimes really were, it's even worse.

Patricia Cornwall gave a very good argument at solving the Jack the Ripper cases. Her book, Jack the Ripper: Case Closed is a really good read, I won't divulge her theory, but it wasn't a "Jackie." Convinced me 100%.

Well, I think it's really tacky and I hate it. They want people to rally behind "the rippers"? I.e. a legendary murderer? I think it's tasteless.
