I recently purchased a TB/Oldenburg mare. Her dam is Renee a TB broodmare who's sire won over $150 000 on the track. Her sire however is Gervantus II(Grannus). I've done some research on her sire's side looking at Grannus' get and also Gervantus II's get. I am super pleased as to what I see there. I have considered breeding this mare and am wondering what lines cross well with Grannus lines. I'm breeding for an upper level eventer or jumper. 99% chance I won't ever sell the foal but there's the 1% chance(just in case something happens). I'm hoping to breed to an Oldenburg as I'd love to be able to register the foal as an Oldenburg. Regena(my mare) is registered Canadian Warmblood and I am hoping to see about registering her as a Oldenburg(if possible). So, what stallions do you like to mix with Grannus lines?

I know nothing about Gervantus II, and I would want to know the rest of his pedigree before making any real recommendations...

However, I do have a mare who is by Royal Appearance (Riverman/ Calando I), and out of a Grannus mare. This particular mare has crossed well with both Rubino Bellissimo for a Dressage foal (foal sold as stallion prospect, is now two), and Landfriese II for a jumper. I would be pleased to repeat both crosses. My mare's dam had an Elite Mare daughter by Cor Noir as well.

Okay thanks! I checked and Riverman is actually #1 on the USEF Eventing sire list so definitely a choice to consider if I breed for an eventer.

Gervantus had a lot of TB blood in his damline - including Vollkorn, who sired the great eventing stallion Volturno.

A Gervantus-TB mare would have a pretty high percentage of TB blood, so probably a nice pedigree for an eventer. For an Eventing foal, a stallion with a fair amount of TB blood would make sense (Aberjack would be hard to argue with), but for a big ring JUMPER foal, I think I would focus on stallions without a high percentage of TB blood up close.

As mentioned Argentinus and Furioso II blood combines well with Grannus. I think there is only one approved Argentinus son in NA, though (Apiro). Direct Furioso II sons are getting hard to find (they are all pretty old), so you would probably have to look at a grandson or great-grandson.

Riverman does not contain Argentinus or Furioso II blood, but he may be an interesting choice nonetheless (although he is currently #9 on the USEF leading sire list for eventing - not #1 - http://www.usef.org/_IFrames/pointsA...ewCat=Eventing ).

second horse down under 'Horses Under Saddle' is argentinus x granulit. granulit is a grannus son who was successful both in the dressage and jumping rings.

I'm gonna look into the stallions mentioned above. There is an olympic eventer about 3-4 hours from me who breeds with Gervantus II A LOT so I'm gonna email her and see what lines she likes as well.

And just so you guys can see the mare in question, here are some pics of Regena. None very recent (around May) and none of her doing cross-country. If I get out again this year I'll try and get some.

I would also recommend Argentinus. He's a wonderful stallion who consistently produces good horses for both dressage and jumping, and the Argentinus x Grannus cross has also worked pretty well.

Having that said, I am an absolute fan of Stakatto, and haven't seen anything by him I didn't like. I don't know how he crosses with Grannus but might be worth a look.

As for the Furioso II nick, if you're okay with grey, Mannhattan is a Furioso II grandson (Finesse), and is a super producer of jumpers and eventers. He, from what I've seen, throws about half grey and half non-grey babies.

My horse actually is by Mannhattan (he's black), and his dam has G-Line (she has Goldstein, who like Grannus, has Gotthard in the line). I can put in a plug for my horse that he's very athletic, and although he's my dressage horse, I've always thought he'd make a good eventer or jumper with his heart and athleticism. Not to mention a super temperament with lots of "try".

We stand a Gervantus x Burgrraaf x Voltaire stallion who is a very nice cross. Having seen a lot of Gervantus offspring you probably want to add length of leg and lightness to the front end and more sitting power. The temperaments you can't beat very Amateur friendly not spooky but careful enough. Our stallion Zeno would be one to consider he is Quattro x Burgrraaf adds a very good shoulder and front leg as well as power from behind and keeps enough blood.

Ill throw another idea out there...I love the brain on Escapade who is crossed Escudo I/Grannus. How about using Escudo II since he's fresh and in the US? I'm not sure if he's Oldenburg, but you can't ask for a better SO to work with!!

Yes this is very true, as can be seen by one of his approved stallion sons, Banderas who is out of a Grannus-Beach Boy mare.

Seems to me that you should use a Balou du Rouet son out of an Argentinus mare. Bliss MF or Bon Balou would fit that bill for sure!
