Should I Consider Breeding Her?

I have a German Papered Hanoverian mare who I adore. I'm considering breeding her in the next few years. However, I'm well aware of issues around unwanted horses, so even though I would only plan to breed for myself I want to make sure I'm bring a horse into the world that someone who wasn't me would want to own. I of course thing my mare is wonderful but I want un-objective opinions. I'd also like to hear any suggestions for good stallions. She tends toward being shy so I'm looking for a stallion who throws foals with a confident, mellow disposition. I'm also looking for stallions who throw dressage or eventer type foals with nice action. She hasn't been inspected so I'd be looking to inspect her with a foal at her side, so I was planning to stay with the Hanoverian registry.

I'd also love to hear from anyone who has offspring related to her. Most of the information about her heritage is in German which, sadly, I don't read.

Sir Caletto has Wienerwald in the dam line if you want to know other offspring related to her.

With her pedigree and temperament, I would want to look for an easy going guy like Don Principe. He tends to be more of a dressage type than an event type, but I would think you should at least be able to do the lower levels of eventing.

I own Sigourney by Singular Joter out of Sendbotin. Sendbotin had three licensed stallions one by Singular Joter and two by Ramiro's Bube. Sigourney was the #3 mare in the US the year she was inspected. She has made some very good riding horses. Your mare is very much bred to jump. If she has a good free jump and you want to breed a jumper she should produce a good one. I would choose a stallion with a bit longer front leg as the line tends to be short in the front leg but they sit down very well.

I am not going to give you stallion advice..... But rather breeding advice.

Too many people out there, want to "reproduce" the horse they already have. Almost an impossible dream! However, you're best served knowing what strength lies within her pedigree and choosing the "proper" stallion for her to get a new prospect. On its own it has the potential to be great, not just good, but great!

So if you choose to breed your mare, choose wisely. Don't choose a stallion because you love the way he looks or they way he jumps. Choose him because he's THE BEST choice for your mare. When you do that, you are less likely to be disappointed and you create an animal many will like.
