Carmen Schatte started her 2017 season by riding Lady Elvira to the top of the training rider division at Ocala Winter I Horse Trials (Fla.) on Jan. 7-8. But a few years ago, Schatte wasn’t even sure if she wanted to keep riding.

She’d worked hard to achieve her goals with her off-the-track Thoroughbred The Flying Tomato—bringing him up to be consistent at the preliminary level and jumping around their first intermediate cross-country.

Winner Of The Week: Lizzie Walters Has Turned Quirky Into Confident

“There’s something about bringing your own horse along that’s so rewarding. Who knew a quirky 3-year-old I found on Facebook would turn into such a competitive and strong athlete?” posted Lizzie Walters on Facebook a few weeks ago after she and her mare, Proven Reputation, jumped a clear round in a 1.05-meter jumper class.

Walters finished that post with the sentiment: “So proud to have a horse that can hold her own in other disciplines and here’s to hoping that all this summer’s cross training will pay off.”

What’s an eventer to do when she’s hours away from most events, and there’s only one cross-country course in her state?

If that eventer is Summer Peterson, she spearheads a movement to bring another event to the area. And then, when that event turns out to be a great success, she rides in—and wins!—the first preliminary-level event they host. Peterson rode her own Mustang-Thoroughbred cross, Jake The Fish, to the top of the preliminary division at The Event At Skyline (Utah).

Winner Of The Week: Lutz Bests The Big Horses At GAIG/USDF Region 8 Championships

Susanne Hamilton traveled to Germany last summer with very specific instructions about what kind of horse her amateur client Bettina Hinckley was looking for—“a dainty, elegant black mare that’s easy to sit.”

So Hinckley was a bit surprised when Hamilton sent her a photo of Lutz, a stocky, creamy palomino Haflinger gelding.

“Well I think the only thing I came home with that fit the profile was the ‘nice to sit,’ because I came home with Lutz!” said Hamilton.
