Bridgewater College Coach Retires

BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Nationally known riding coach Sarah Irvine – under whose tutelage the Bridgewater College riding program became one of the most respected and competitive in the region – announced today that she will retire at the conclusion of the 2010-11 school year.

Southern Sweep At Tournament Of Champions Pre-Season Classic

A rainy start to the day didn’t deter many of the top collegiate equestrian teams in the nation in their quest for notoriety and bragging rights in the Tournament of Champions Preseason Classic, hosted Sunday, September 26, on the campus of Goucher College in the Baltimore suburb of Towson, Maryland.   The rain eventually gave way to sunny skies, just as some of the traditional front runners in collegiate riding gave way to some hot young programs intent on setting a new direction in IHSA.

IHSA Rides For The Ribbon

“I really want the world to know that our students perform community service and are anxious to help good causes,” said Naomi Blumenthal, of Manlius, New York, who sits on the six-member national board of directors for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA).

Since 2008, IHSA has contributed a portion of every entry fee from hunter seat Novice Flat and Novice Western classes, at every regular-season show throughout the year, to Ride For The Ribbon, to support breast cancer awareness.

Skidmore College was hoping to seal their sixth championship today, Friday, May 7, at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championships in Lexington, Ky., but despite their consistency, Centenary College (N.J.) and University of Findlay (Ohio) closed the gap with strong rides from their team riders.

Centenary College’s Equestrian Program Teaches More Than Good Riding

Since the school began offering riding classes in the 1930s, Centenary has paved the way for equestrian education.

Centenary College’s Intercollegiate Horse Show Association hunt seat team riders had no expectations when they arrived at IHSA Nationals last April. They wanted to be successful, but their goals centered on riding well and having fun.

So it was a sweet surprise when they walked away with the school’s first Collegiate Cup championship
since 1979.
