Thomas Baur Joins Adequan Global Dressage Festival

FEI dressage committee member Thomas Baur has joined Equestrian Sports Productions for the 2014 Adequan Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Fla.

Baur, 43, is a member of the International Equestrian Organisers Alliance and is also involved with the Internationales Maimarkt-Turnier (Germany) and Pappas Amadeus Horse Indoors (Austria) shows.

Garza Perez Is Golden At Adequan/FEI NAJYRC

Lexington, Ky. - July 20

For the first time since 1996, Mexico brought home an individual gold medal in the show jumping competition at the Adequan/FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships. A member of Mexico’s silver medal-winning team earlier in the week, Eugenio Garza Perez captured individual gold in the junior championship riding his 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding Bariano, adding no penalties over the five-round competition.

Kentucky Eventer Dies In Riding Accident

Eventer Christine Brown, Versailles, Ky., was killed in a riding accident at her home on July 10. An avid equestrian, Brown competed on the University of Kentucky’s equestrian team and through the intermediate level in eventing.

Woodford County coroner Ronald Owens speculated that Brown fell when her horse crashed through a jump. Brown, 43, was wearing a helmet but sustained internal injuries during the fall.

Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials Canceled

The Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials have been canceled due to extremely wet conditions and a poor weather forecast. The horse trials were scheduled for July 11-14 in Victor, N.Y., and this year marks the first cancelation in the event’s 24-year history.

“We’re very sorry for all the riders who were planning on coming, but it’s very unsafe; there’s standing water, and we’re supposed to get rain every day this week. It would have been an absolute mess,” said organizer Heidi Stuart Vahue.

Vahue added that even tractors haven’t been able to traverse the 100-acre property.

Pony Task Force Formed

The U.S. Equestrian Federation and the U.S. Dressage Federation have teamed up to create the U.S. Pony Task Force in an effort to increase pony sport in dressage. The Pony Task Force will focus its efforts on promoting ponies for juniors and adult amateur dressage riders. 

Task Force members include Allison Head, Lendon Gray, Bill Solyntjes, Gary Rockwell, Jeremy Steinberg and Melissa Mulchahey.

Harpo Went From Neighborhood Terror To Fierce Competitor

What do you get when you take a formerly abused and neglected Hackney pony and pair him with two combined driving rookies? If the pony is Harpo and the drivers are Jennifer Keeler and husband David Harris, you get a successful CDE team.

Keeler, of Paris, Ky., grew up riding and now shows her Quarter Horse, Reilly, in the hunters. She’d tried some pleasure driving with Reilly, but Keeler and Harris enjoyed combined driving only as spectators—until Keeler met Harpo.

House Committee Approves Protections For Hunting On Public Land

On June 14 the House of Representatives Natural Resource Committee voted 28-15 in favor of the new Recreational Fishing and Hunting Heritage and Opportunities Act, H.R. 1825.

Introduced by Representative Dan Benishek (R-Mich.), the new policy allows public access to lands under the authority of the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management unless specific steps are taken to close them. The land governed by these organizations will be available for recreational hunting, fishing and shooting unless specific action is taken otherwise.

Coleman Takes Home A Big Win In The Omega Alpha Weekend Update

Will Coleman stuck to his Bromont traditions and finished the weekend with another win.

Coleman put in one of only two clean show jumping rounds of the division to win the Volvo Bromont CCI*** (Quebec) aboard Obos O’Reilly. This is the second time Coleman has won the CCI***, earning blue in 2010 with Nevada Bay.

Thirty Horses Die On Way To Slaughterhouse

On May 6, a tractor-trailer carrying 30 horses burst into flames on northbound Interstate 81 in Lisle, N.Y. The horses were being shipped from Shippensburg, Pa., to a slaughterhouse in Massueville, Quebec, reported the Utica Observer-Dispatch.  

More than 30 firefighters from three fire departments—Marathon, Killawog and Whitney Point—attempted to stop the flames and block the highway.
