So if you watched the live-stream of the $384,000 Rolex CSI***** Grand Prix on Saturday night, you probably noticed something different about winning rider Danielle Goldstein’s hair. Namely that it is not, in fact, hair, but roughly 500 individual feathers pulled back in a ponytail!

Read all about how Goldstein beat veteran stars McLain Ward and Eric Lamaze in the COTH coverage of the class.

“I always like to do something funky,” Goldstein, 32, said with a laugh. “I don’t know, I’m a bit of a quirky person. I’ve had pink hair, blue hair, and I was trying to think of something different.”

It was actually her boyfriend’s idea to get all feathered out.

“We were looking at pictures and I said, ‘Oh I could put a feather in my hair,’ and he said, ‘What if you did all feathers,’ ” Goldstein said. “And I went, ‘Oh my gosh, genius!’ ”

The idea got the green light in seconds but it took a bigger commitment to actually make it a reality.

“It took 10 hours over three days to put in,” Goldstein said. “I had it done in Holland. I bought the feathers from all different places though, and I’ll sit around and make different little ones and then say hey, put this in!”

It’s not just Goldstein’s hair that stands out from the crowd—she also often rides in yoga pants in place of breeches, and she ditches the traditional show shirts and rat catchers for more trendy white workout tops.

Feathers, brown gloves, a turquoise coat and some snakeskin-topped tall boots? Danielle Goldstein knows how to mix it up for sure! Photo by Ann Glavan.

“The sport is hard because you have to wear such a strict dress code so I like to mix it up, do something fun,” Goldstein said. “The sport could use a little mixing up!”
