On the heels of the ASG Software Solutions/USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, Aug. 21-22, U.S. Hunter Jumper Association officials have decided to accept additional applications from shows wishing to host The Chronicle of the Horse/USHJA International Hunter Derbies for the 2009-10 season.

Applications will be accepted until Oct. 1.

“We’ve had an overwhelming response to this program,” said USHJA High Performance Committee chairman Ron Danta. “We had such a huge number of people wanting derby dates that the committee decided to allow more shows to apply. The finals really set things on fire.”

It hasn’t been decided how many more derbies will be added to the calendar, which currently includes 15 additional competitions through June 1, 2010. Applications will be reviewed by the High Performance Committee and the USHJA, and the committee will announce which additional applications have been accepted by Nov. 15.

Classes will be awarded in part based on geographic balance and variance of dates. “This is a national championship, not a regional championship,” said Melanie Fransen, USHJA director of programs and education. “We want to give riders across the entire country a chance to qualify.”
