Settled In

I’m glad to say the horses had a better trip than some of the riders!

After two hours of sleep we left Georgia, and the flies, in a three-trailer caravan with vet Brendan Furlong following close behind.

We arrived at the Kentucky Horse Park around 8.30 a.m. After various security checks the horses were unloaded and in their stalls by 9:15. Dougie Hannum had done the most amazing job of preparing our barn. He repainted all our stalls with flags, banners and trunks galore, so no one can miss the Americans when they pass.

Woodburn is enjoying the cooler temperatures; he definitely knows that the game has now changed. His attitude is more boisterous, and when he’s out hand grazing, he continuously decides were he would like to go!

Yesterday was a slow day; the horses had a quiet one whilst all the team got accredited and familiarized with the different layout of the Horse Park. It can be very confusing with all the rules and regulations that the organizers are trying to put in place.

Sara Ike, our team manager, has to navigate her way through the whole system, but she still made sure all the grooms got our meal vouchers. You have to remember a grumpy groom is an unhappy rider!

Our living accommodations are in FEMA trailers. They might not be the Ritz, but considering other places we have been to, they are perfectly adequate. The shuttle system leaves something to be desired and would appear not to be that trustworthy yet. Hopefully that will improve by competition time! At the moment we are getting fit with biking around.

Last night we got to watch the opening ceremony. Karen [O’Connor] had a great time carrying the flag for the USA. So much work was put into the show. It varied from cheerleading, Indian blessings, the Friesian Train dressage display, various breeds, and the highlight was an appearance by Mohammad Ali.

The USA is off to a great start with the reining team winning gold.

That sets the bar high for the rest of us to follow.

Until next time,
Emma
