“No horse—racing on dirt, turf, synthetic, or over the jumps—did more to revive his image in 2012 than this one,” wrote Joe Clancy in the Daily Racing Form. “The Kentucky-bred began his 8-year-old season with three consecutive losses to extend his career winless streak to nine races and more than three years, then went on a tear with back-to-back Grade 1 triumphs.”

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association, the National Turf Writers and Broadcasters Association, and the Daily Racing Form vote each season to determine the Eclipse winners. Pierrot Lunaire received 116 votes; Demonstrative, 99; Divine Fortune, 1; Arcadius, 1; Woodmont, 1; and one voter abstained.
