One, Two, Three Wins for Keenan

It was a record-setting weekend in Lexington, Ky., as 10-year-old Lillie Keenan captured all three regular pony championships at the Wild Horsefeathers/USEF Pony Hunter Finals on August 19. Keenan earned the grand championship on medium pony Enchanted Forest, the small pony championship on Blackberry and reserve overall championship on large pony Vanity Fair.

The talented New York City native couldn’t stop praising her mounts. “They’re all so wonderful,” said Keenan, who rides at Heritage Farms. “I'm so lucky to get to ride them all.  They were all perfect all week.”

“I’m so lucky to get to ride them all.  They were all perfect all week.”

As the high scorer in the medium pony division from yesterday, Keenan and Chansonette Farm’s Enchanted Forest were the final pair to jump the course. “I was so nervous because I was last to go,” said Keenan. “After every single fence I closed my eyes and took a deep breath and said, ‘OK, I caught that one.’ ”

Keenan’s technique helped keep her nerves in check as she guided the flashy bay gelding around J.P. Godard’s course, which featured several long bending lines. Enchanted Forest earned the highest jumping score of the competition, 263, to bring her total up to 1058. The score was the highest at the show, securing the championship and overall grand championship.

With Keenan’s accurate riding, large pony Vanity Fair, on loan from Adrienne Sternlicht earned a decisive victory over the competition, scoring more than 10 points higher than the second-placed pony. The pair laid down such a beautiful trip that it was clear they’d won the class—and the championship—as soon as they landed the last jump. Vanity Fair’s total of 1021 was high enough to secure the overall reserve championship.

Her first mount of the day, Heritage Farm’s Blackberry, didn’t earn a single ribbon in the model or under saddle, and Blackberry entered the final day of competition in 15th place, 32 points off the lead. But their outstanding performance in the single over fences class propelled the pair to the top of the division. The flashy bay mare’s score of 262 actually tied that of Whitney Roper’s Strike A Pose, ridden by Lulu Farish, but in the jumping portion of the competition the first judge’s score breaks the tie, and Blackberry earned an 88 to Strike A Pose’s 86.

Keenan left her other small pony, Ingenue, at home, as the unique format of Pony Finals only permits each rider one pony in each division. Last year it was Blackberry who stayed in her stall, as her rider Schaefer Raposa opted to take Supertrooper, who won the small pony championship.

While Keenan took the victories in stride, her friends, family and supporters were beside themselves. “This is one of the most exciting moments I’ve ever experienced,” said trainer Patricia Griffith of Heritage Farms. “I never thought this would happen. I can’t remember anyone else ever winning all three championships.”

Griffith chalked up Keenan’s success to her innate talent and desire to learn. “She shows up every day really wanting to learn, both on their backs and in the barn,” said Griffith. “She’s like a little sponge.”
