Equestrian Australia confirmed that 17-year-old Olivia Inglis died on March 6 while competing in the CIC** at the Scone Horse Trials in Scone, New South Wales.

Inglis was competing in her first CIC** with Coriolanus, an 11-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, when they fell on cross-country.

The event has not confirmed how the pair fell, but 7 News Sydney is reporting that the gelding flipped over a fence and fell on top of Olivia.

She was immediately seen to by paramedics but was unable to be revived.

“We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and sympathy from family and friends throughout the school, equestrian and Thoroughbred communities,” stated Olivia’s parents Arthur and Charlotte Inglis in a statement. “We are so proud of Olivia and the beautiful young woman she was in every way. We are blessed to have had the opportunity to share our passion for horses with our children. This has led us on a great journey where we have been able to spend countless happy moments and special family times. So much to celebrate and a life so joyous and well lived.”

Coriolanus was seen by a vet and was initially reported to be doing well. But an update on March 8 stated that further examination revealed the gelding had a displaced fracture in his neck, and he was euthanized.

Inglis was a member of a well-known Australian racing family and had competed at the one-star level on Coriolanus and Vinchenzo.
