New Bloodline Database Launched For Retired Racehorses

Have you ever wondered if Native Dancer produced good eventing mounts? Or whether Fusaichi Pegasus’ foals had even temperaments? Or how trainable a horse with Storm Cat bloodlines is? If you’ve ever bought or considered buying an ex-racehorse, the Retired Racehorse Training Project’s “Bloodline Brag” could be an indispensable tool.

The Bloodline Brag website, which went live three weeks ago, is a Wikipedia-style database that generates data about the careers of ex-racehorses after they’ve left the track. Users submit profiles of their horses, including ratings of 1-5 for trainability, flight instinct, movement, jumping and soundness. The user can include other information, such as anecdotes or competition highlights for a horse, as well as conformation and action photos.

“There’s a real lack of information about what bloodlines make good riding horses,” said Steuart Pittman, president of the Retired Racehorse Training Project. “It’s going to be a huge service to the horse community.”

Since the website went live, users have uploaded information on more than 300 horses. The search feature allows queries to be done by discipline, sire or dam, and there’s also a keyword search.

“We don’t want to showcase just show horses, we also want to know about horses if they’re foxhunters or used in therapeutic riding programs,” Pittman said. “If you’re looking at a horse on the track, you can find information about even obscure sires or dams.”
