Local Community Contributes to Virginia Horse Center Road Improvements

Lexington, VA - June 30, 2014 - On Wednesday, June 25, like magic, five dump truck loads of gravel stone dust appeared at the Virginia Horse Center (VHC). Within hours a Bobcat, a grader and some additional road construction equipment followed while the VHC grounds crew steadily watered the main road - a road dented with potholes and erosion.

Lexington, VA – June 30, 2014 – On Wednesday, June 25, like magic, five dump truck loads of gravel stone dust appeared at the Virginia Horse Center (VHC). Within hours a Bobcat, a grader and some additional road construction equipment followed while the VHC grounds crew steadily watered the main road – a road dented with potholes and erosion.

Three local men who appreciate the VHC’s many contributions to the Rockbridge County-area economy decided they wanted to give something back.

The plan was hatched by Stuart Deacon of W.R. Deacon & Sons Timber Inc. and brought to the VHC by long time advocate and Rockbridge County resident Otis Mead. Deacon recruited Randy Hostetter of Randy Hostetter Excavating LLC and his crew. Rockbridge County Administrator Spencer Stuart suggested Chuck Barger of Charles W. Barger & Son who contributed the stone dust.

With various pieces of equipment, this group spent much of Wednesday evening spreading the stone dust in the intersection of the Wiley Arena, the Moore Arena and what is now called the Winner’s Ring restaurant (soon to be reopened as the Blue Hen at VHC in the near future) and grading and updating the main road into the Horse Center. This effort effectively created a viable short term solution to various issues. Additional work on the Horse Center road will be scheduled in the near future.
