Laura Kraut Suffers Broken Jaw

Laura Kraut broke her jaw while competing in the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Monaco on June 25. Kraut and Cedric were jumping in the first round when Cedric stopped at a plank vertical.

“I had a little bit of a miscommunication with Cedric, and he left the ground then changed his mind and put down, and I whacked my chin on his head,” Kraut said.

She broke her jaw back by her ear and also broke three molars. Doctors advised against operating to repair the jaw because the break was near the optic nerves.

“It just basically has to heal,” Kraut said. “To be honest, that part has been the least uncomfortable part of it; the worst has been the teeth. And they can’t fix my teeth for two or three months because I can’t open my mouth that wide. I just eat a lot slower! It’s a bummer, but of all the injuries I’ve ever had it’s the easiest one.”

The injury didn’t slow Kraut down; she rode Tierra to win the Wettenhall Grand Prix (England) on July 4. And she jumped two clean rounds on Cedric at the show jumping portion of the Olympic Test Event in Greenwich Park, London, on July 6.

Though Cedric’s stop in Monaco came on the heels of another refusal, which resulted in a fall for Kraut, during the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Cannes (France) on June 11, Kraut assured Cedric’s fans that he’s in fine form.

“Those venues are very small, and both times I was too long to the jump. It was my fault. The second time, when I broke my jaw, it was out of a blind turn to a very vertical, very careful jump. I was galloping forward, but I didn’t put my leg on because I didn’t want to knock it down, and I think he just didn’t feel confident. Everything comes up so quickly in those little rings. Even though he’s a small size, he prefers large arenas like Wellington [Fla.] or Aachen [Germany],” she said.

On July 12, Cedric jumped a clean round in a class at the Aachen CHIO.
