Canadian Olympian Jessica Phoenix was seriously injured in a fall on the CCI** cross-country course at the Jersey Fresh International Horse Trials in Allentown, N.J., on May 9.

Phoenix was riding Exultation, an 11-year-old Thoroughbred gelding (Sea Wall—Peek A Boo Ruckus) that has been competing at the two-star level since last year.

Phoenix, 31, Cannington, Ontario, was the second rider of the day out on cross-country in the CCI** and was sitting in 16th place after dressage.

The pair suffered a rotational fall at fence 6, a hanging log at the edge of the woods with a steep drop on the landing side that has been on the course for several years.

While “James” was uninjured, Phoenix was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J., where she was found to have broken three ribs, her sacrum and her clavicle. She underwent surgery to repair damage to her liver on May 10.

Phoenix’s husband, Joel, confirmed Jessica was moved out of the ICU on May 12 and is in good spirits.

“She’s doing better, and she’s out of the ICU,” he said. “She’s stable and resting. We don’t know how long she’ll be in the hospital right now. We’re just taking it day by day. She should be fine in a little time.”
