A barn fire in Woodstock, Ill., claimed the lives of 32 horses on Nov. 22.

The fire broke out just before 11 p.m., and it ultimately destroyed the barn at Valley View Acres according to the Northwest Herald. The barn, owned by Amber and Tyson Bauman, housed 37 horses, primarily hunters and jumpers. Five horses escaped the fire.

The Baumans were attending the Illinois Hunter Jumper Association awards banquet Saturday evening when the blaze started. Their sons, 15 and 9, were at home at the time and awakened after the eldest son heard an odd sound.

That son and a groom were able to save five horses according to ABC 7 Eyewitness News.

The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department responded to the fire and requested additional manpower, equipment and water tenders because the farm was in an area without fire hydrants. Fire departments from surrounding districts aided in the effort and gained control of the blaze at 12:30 a.m. the next day.

The preliminary damage estimate is over $1 million.

The Baumans have been in business since 1992 and had been at the Woodstock location for the past eight years. David and Lindsay Sander set up a YouCaring fundraising page to benefit the Baumans and the five horses that survived.

“The horse community is really like a family,” Amber told the Daily Herald. “Everyone supports one another. It’s pretty amazing.”
