The rider in the photo, Nicholas Vergette, served as huntsman for the now-defunct Southern Illinois Open Hunt. The original caption for the photos, which ran in The Chronicle of the Horse in early 1967, notes that he and his horse, Billy’s Joy, “survived the fall.” Vergette also served as an art professor at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale’s School of Art and Design from 1960 to 1974, and the school’s art gallery is named in his honor.
