End Over End

It took jockey David Bourke a long time to recover from the broken pelvis he sustained in this rotational fall during the 1994 International Gold Cup steeplechase in The Plains, Va., but his mount, Political Angel, was unhurt.

Today Bourke works as a trainer, and photographer Douglas Lees of Warrenton, Va., continues to capture spectacular images like this one—albeit in color—as he’s done for decades.

The 74th annual International Gold Cup will run on Oct. 15 at Great Meadow near The Plains—the venue that has hosted the meet since 1984. Prior to that, the race had been run over Lt. Gen. Richard King Mellon’s course at the Rolling Rock Hunt Club in Pennsylvania. The Gold Cup was established in 1930 at Grassland Downs in Tennessee, and King Alfonso XIII of Spain, known then as one of the world’s most gallant riders and sportsmen, dedicated the original gold trophy that is still awarded to the winner today.
