Boone Makes Magic in the USEF/Adequan Individual Pony Jumper Championship

Droves of supporters trekked to the Kentucky Horse Park  on Aug. 18th to watch Lexington, Ky., native Elizabeth Boone vie for the Adequan/USEF Individual Pony Jumper Championship at the USEF Pony Finals National Championship. And Boone gave them a show to remember, posting the only two clear rounds of the day and earning the individual pony jumper championship aboard Campbellcroft LLC’s Magic BB.

The elated 12-year-old couldn’t stop praising her mount. “He is such a good boy,” she said. “He’ll leave from anywhere, he tries so hard.”

The scopey bay gelding belied his 21 years as he easily cleared the level 2 course, the only pony to post four double-clear rounds at the championship competition.

The top 60 percent of the pony jumper competitors were invited to contest tonight’s class. But many top pairs took down rails and zipped through the timers a few seconds too slow. The championship was run in a modified Nations’ Cup format, carrying over the faults from previous rounds. At the end of the third round of competition, only two ponies had managed to stay clean and clear all week: Magic BB and Partly Cloudy, ridden by Tori Berlin.

After six four-fault ponies jumped off for the bronze medal, the top two ponies had their chance to earn the gold. Berlin brought her grey pony back to the ring first, striking up a strong pace and attacking the course.  But Partly Cloudy caught the second fence of the in-and-out, posting four faults.

In order to secure the gold Boone had only to jump clear.  “I just planned to take my time and try to go clean,” said Boone. With Boone’s careful ride, Magic BB easily sailed over all of the jumps and stopped the timers well within the time allowed, securing the gold medal.

Boone is having a fantastic week, having earned the second-place award in the USEF Pony Medal Final yesterday. But it was a bittersweet award, as Boone dropped out of blue-ribbon contention when she jumped the wrong jump during the test, so today’s fantastic performance should brighten her day.

Boone will return to the show ring tomorrow for the final day of competition.  Her mount, Bridgewater, currently sits sixth overall in the large pony division.

In the hunter ring, Schaefer Raposa has trotted to the top of the USEF Pony Hunter Championship standings with two ponies. Grand Central Inc.’s RosMel’s Millennium sits in first in the small division, having collected 517 points after winning the under saddle and finishing third in the model.

Raposa also showed Grand Central Inc.’s Emerson to the lead in the large pony division, with 522 points.  The pony earned the blue ribbon in the model class and placed second under saddle.

In the medium division, Chansonette Farm LLC’s Enchanted Forest, shown by Lillie Keenan, won the under saddle and took second in the model. The pony already earned the best turned out equitation pony accolades, and with 532 points has the lead in the grand pony championship.

But the competition heats up tomorrow, with the single over fences class that will count for 50 percent toward the total score.  The competition gets underway tomorrow at 7:30 a.m. with the small ponies going first.
