The 2013 edition of the Athina Onassis Horse Show, scheduled to take place Oct. 25-27 at the National Equestrian Center of Deodoro, in Rio de Janeiro, has been canceled.

Organizers of the show had planned for it to be a test event for the equestrian portion of the 2016 Olympic Games. The Athina Onassis show was to have moved from its former location in Sao Paulo to the Deodoro Sports Complex in Rio de Janeiro. Organizers planned to build grandstand seats for 2,000 and invite spectators to build local interest. But logistical difficulties in the construction of the arena resulted in the cancellation of this year’s event.

“We reiterate our commitment to the development of riding in Brazil and we are confident in achieving the OHAs in 2014,” said the organziers.

The show was founded by Athina Onassis de Miranda and Alvaro de Miranda in 2007 and quickly became a popular stop on the show jumping circuit.
