A 48-Hour Record

Well, the summer eventing season is rolling on, and things are moving at a hard and fast pace here at TPF! I originally had seven rides entered in the Maryland Horse Trails this weekend, with Wauwinet (Wyatt) moving up to preliminary, but I’m excited to say that this number dropped down to six when Wyatt found himself a fabulous new home at Birch Hill Farm in Vermont!

I know he’ll be very happy with his new life, and his new owner will enjoy him very much. I’m sure Karen Lorenzo will be missing him very much, since she imported him from Germany as a 2-year-old.

In another odd twist of events, Bantry Bay, a horse that I literally got in the day before from my good friend Tory Smith in California, went to the same home as well. I must say, I’ve never sold two horses to the same person in a day, and I’ve also never found a horse a new home within 48 hours of being on the property!

I’m thrilled that both horses are in the best of care. I admit that I was looking forward to having the ride on Bantry Bay for a while, but I’m happier that he’s in the perfect spot for his new life.

I had Indie in the preliminary over the weekend, and he was quite good in the dressage, scoring a 26. The show jumping in the new arena was quite spooky, but Indie handled the job better than I thought he would and was quite smooth. Unfortunately I had the back rail of an oxer down on the in to the triple, but he did have a good round. With a clean trip on cross-country I was tied with the one and only Mr. Boyd Martin, who was closer to the optimum and ended up fifth. It was really nice to have Boyd back in the states and home… We all missed him!

I had a busy Sunday with five horses running the training level in quite hot weather. I’m still amazed at the East Coast format of events, where you can show five horses in all three phases within six hours. A big thank you to my amazing pit crew Kelley Merette and Jackson Roberts!

Grayson was fabulous and won training division A on a 28. With two double-clear jumping trips, he’s really going quite well. I plan to move him up to preliminary at Stuart (N.Y.), and his owner Erin Hurley and I are really thrilled with how well he’s going.

Dreamboat ended on his dressage score to come third for Beth Battel in a big class as well, while Nina Gardner’s Catchy Melody had the move up to training level for the season and came sixth in the same class. Susanne Kloud and Beth Battel’s Ollie did his first training this weekend, and I was happy with him… Though we had a bit of a green show jumping round with one down, he came fifth after scoring a 26 on the flat. Susanne’s other horse Zoom Zoom was eighth as well and ended a busy hot Sunday for me at Loch Moy.

Other fun news in the barn: It was great to see Lillian Heard, Caitlin Silliman and B. Martin out having the battle for the blue in the open beginner novice A this weekend… I was cracking up at the level of “friendly” competition they were having amongst themselves. Of course Marto came out on top, ending on a 20, which is pretty darn impressive.

Amy Ruth Borun got a fabulous new horse from one Kelli Temple. We’re calling him Chazz in the barn. And Connaught left to go down to Bruce Duchossois’ place for his retirement. I think Miss Emma Ford was sad to send him off!

We left this morning for the Cosequin Stuart Horse Trials at 3:30 a.m. Should be fun!

Hope everyone is doing well, and best of luck!
